Brandi Ortega was your typical teenager, went to school to pass the time and she was fully dedicated to her family. During her school career- her father was involved in a serious accident leaving him in need of full time home care. She made the choice to leave school to become his caregiver during his difficult time. Brandi struggled in school, with ADHD and learning disabilities she found it difficult to continue on. The social anxiety of class and passing time was a lot of pressure, secluding back to her home and security was a welcomed change.

As an adult Brandi found herself making the transition from cannabis smoking to the “legal” alternative, drinking alcohol. Days after having her baby boy, she fell and injured her back so severely, she became disabled. Falling into depression, she began to consume more and more alcohol, struggling to control the immense back pain and creeping depression, she needed an out. She found herself in a haze of self deprecating thoughts with no income, no ability to work, no high school education to get any sort of tasked job she might be able to bring herself able to do. She was lost, and worst was she saw herself become a kind of mother she never dreamed of becoming. Thru the pain, she struggled but realized with the doctors note that she CANNOT work a physical job any longer, this is it… she needed a change.

Brandi made the switch back from alcohol to cannabis once MIssouri legalized medical marijuana, and in addition to smoking she delved into consuming cannabis. She watched countless youtube videos, searched thru platforms and panels all over the web and gained the knowledge to begin cultivating marijuana for. In growing her own, she found she could customize the strains to her needs to fill in the gaps of the medications she was weaning from. She decided on infusing oils for her medical doses. She could pop some into her morning coffee to shrug off the aches from the night, and begin her morning. Throughout the day she may add other sources of medicating, but the oil is her steady supplier of pain relief. Switching back to cannabis didn’t just clear Brandi of the alcohol addiction, it also allowed her to wean off her anxiety medications, along with depression and pain meds too!

Brandi began to see her son struggle with the same issues she went thru in school, and quickly identified cannabis as a possible aid for him. His doctors found themselves without answers for them as well, and unfortunately there were no no further medications could be given to him. End of the road for big pharma- medicinal cannabis stepped in. With his medical card received, and Brandi as his caregiver- she was able to dive into options for him.

Brandi began scouring the internet for recipes and different infusion ways to get her son and daughter their medicine, in a healthy productive manner. They needed to be alert for class, without risking a meltdown or a run off. Brandi searched for strains and techniques to pull the medicinal benefits from the plant, to help them focus and pay attention in class and be able to continue learning with stability.

Remembering the lyrics from Mary Poppins, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down” she settled on infusing sugar! It was the perfect answer! Most kids would love to be given a spoonful of sugar to enjoy! Infusing the sugar with different flavors, meant that they weren’t gonna get bored of 1 flavor and they would excitedly and willingly, medicate, and then return to school, and PROGRESS! The school has noticed changes in him, and even has began to pick up and recognize when they need to be picked up to be medicated.

Yes, in order to medicate, their caregiver- Brandi- must dispense their medicine. This makes it difficult to build a business compound, but just as she was as a child, she is a dedicated family woman. Trusting in God, she medicated her son and daughter with the acceptance and allowance of their support system and community, growing and building their confidence every day. With open communication and teamwork- she is helping to build the community’s acceptance as cannabis as medicine.

This is another driving force behind her- education. Not just educating ourselves on cannabis, but the educational system, the elderly, everyone! Brandi says “My mission, well one of them, is information. For everyone, to see how easy it really is to find relief.”

She says “My kids see that I’ve not only dropped the weight the medications put on me, but that I’m leading a happier healthier life … you use to sit alone at home, and now you have friends all over!”

Brandi says second to walking thru Heaven’s Gates, her biggest achievement in life will be to see her children graduate, to see her children fully live and enjoy their lives. To soar way higher than I ever did.” And she is dedicated to seeing that thru. She thanks God for her blessings, knowing fully well they come from Him.
